The Peace Convergence is concerned that, rather than contributing to our society, these military exercises, and Australia’s ongoing support for US military activity, increase insecurity in our region and worldwide.
“The reality of these activities is that they are targeted and very strategically placed preparations for war,” states spokesperson Robin Taubenfeld.
“Talisman Sabre involves live firing, the use of explosives, the practicing of urban warfare, the use of high power sonar and active sonobuoys, amphibious assaults, parachuting and land force manoeuvres.
“Troops involved in these exercises deploy to or from real war situations, forward deployed units, or other military operations.”
“While discontent with the war in Afghanistan is growing in both Australia and the US, these joint military activities consolidate Australia’s role as a supporter of US lead military activity around the world.”
“As a key ally and friend to the US, we believe that Australia has the opportunity take this alliance in another direction. We want to see an end to the era of ongoing war. For our future and our children’s future, we want to see Australia take the lead down the road to peace.
A number of actions and community events are planned to take place throughout the Exercises.
