The Hon Prime Minister of Australia
Mr Kevin Rudd MP
CANBERRA ACT 2600
Dear Prime Minister,
RE: MEETING FOOTPRINTS FOR PEACE WALKERS – 25 MAY 2010
We were disappointed to learn you have declined to meet with the Footprints for Peace Pilgrims who have walked from Brisbane to Canberra for a specific purpose. That is - To meet with you.
These women have dedicated their time and their energies to take a message that they believe we must strive for peace if there is to be any future for humans and other life on our planet.
They have gathered many people to them along the way In spreading their message. They carry the hopes of all these that you will use your influence as Australia ’s Prime Minister to persuade other nations to embrace peaceful actions in all their dealings but also to lay the foundations for these in our own country.
The support they encountered along their 80 day pilgrimage comes from all sectors of society. They carry messages for you as our Prime Minister from Aboriginal people in Brisbane, from many groups in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and even more right along the east coast of NSW and Sydney all the way to Canberra . This is our way of communicating our concerns in a very direct and personal way to you. We have all invested our time, our energies and our resources in making sure that these pilgrims reach Canberra safely in order to meet with you in person to deliver our messages.
They have achieved an amazing feat. They are women who are “very grounded and composed” (to borrow the words you used to describe the remarkable Jessica Watson). However they are also women who have the protection of all people and the future of the planet at heart, women who have already put a lot into their communities, neighbouring countries and worked for peace wherever they go.
We urge you to meet with them and listen to the messages they carry. In no way does this reflect upon the person of the Hon Tanya Plibersek, a very fine, hardworking and intelligent member of Parliament, whom you suggested as a replacement, but this is not just a women’s issue. It is out of concern for the future of all people and the planet, that these pilgrims need to meet with you.
