Day 17 - The best bacon and egg burgers ever!

There’s something very refreshing about getting into the tent at night knowing that the only thing to do the next day is get up, get dressed and walk. We were up and away before 4.30am and out to the drop off spot within 15 minutes. How quickly the distance goes by in the car! Knowing we only had 20km to cover this day, June and I set a cracking pace back towards town and despite my heavily taped heels (I had developed some slightly worrying blisters the day before), were soon into the swing of the walk.

It is delightful to be walking as the sun rises and very encouraging to receive such courtesy on the road from the enormous road trains and other vehicles that pass by with a wide berth and a wave. June is great company and with the early bird songs providing a melodious background soundtrack, time passed quickly on the walk. By 8am we were starting to get hungry and I was keeping a watchful eye ahead for our support vehicle and the promise of breakfast. As we crossed the first of the two bridges just outside Theodore – we were almost there! - we thought we might get to enjoy breakfast in town. Our thoughts were on a freshly made coffee and a bacon and egg burger from one of the local cafes. A few minutes later, however, we spotted a familiar car “Penelope” up ahead and Potts and Bindi arrived with something even better. The best bacon and egg burger ever! Made from woodfired bread rolls fresh from the bakery with bacon and eggs cooked by Potts on the trangia while June and I lay flat on our backs looking up into the gorgeous gum trees! After this wonderful breakfast we set off for the last 3km into town. Ann met and welcomed us to Theodore and walked with us the rest of the way. Thanks to Ann and Lorraine for your company as we enjoyed our anticipated coffee at the bakery, and to Ann for introducing us to everyone who passed by and spreading word of the walk. And thanks Lorraine for the great ginger biscuits! By Nomes for Walking for a Future :-)
